Interested artists and students will collaborate on developing a theme to decorate the electrical boxes around the city. The effort is similar to initiatives in Malden, Somerville, and Boston. Artists will be given a stipend for supplies and time for project completion will earn community service hours.</p><p>For those who are interested about the art project, there will be a meeting on Thursday, January 19 at 6 PM. The competition will run from 12-3 pm in conjunction with the Malden River Festival that is taking place at the same time and location. It is close to the Wellington T station and before Medford Street in Malden.</p><p>This year competitors will be using 2&#8242;x4&#8242; boards and must bring their own paints or whatever materials they need. (Action, Coalition, Trust) held an input meeting at the Malden Senior Center to brainstorm themes and develop a design for an upcoming city project to create a community mural. The exhibition is on view on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.; Sundays from noon – 2 p.m.; and by appointment through November. A reception for the young artists is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 11, from 2 – 5 p.m.</p><p>Participating youth from Malden are Cristain Martinez, Jacqueline Bouley, Nicolette Timmins, Nathaniel Coulange, Thi Nguyen, Kathleen Knox, Harris Zhao, Jesse Bouley, Grace Cappuccio, Jessica Ma, Anthony Knox, and Jonathan Silva.</p><p>Everett youth are Mai Ly Nugyen, Brandon Phan, David Nguyen, Alex Gabrielli, Nguyen Le, Jenny Thang, Betty Ho, Mary Tran, Anna Nguyen, David Zorrilla, and Ghali Armira.<br /> Other participants are Sandy Chan, Boston; Mahima Karki, Arogya Khadka, and David Huang, Somerville; and Stephenson Kim, Medford.</p><p>The Urban Art Competition enables local youth artists to come out and express their skills in public. The competition provides the opportunity for artists to showcase their work and to be recognized. We had about 100 people from all around including Malden, Everett, Saugus, Somerville, Boston, Lincoln-Sudbury, Medford, Winthrop, and Chelsea!</p><p>Many thanks go to all the organizations and individuals who helped sponsor the event! <a href="http://www.friendsofoakgrove.org/">Friends of Oak Grove, Inc.</a> (FOOGI) provided all the boards and the sound system. The <a href="http://www.bostonredcross.org/">American Red Cross of Massachusetts Bay</a> also came out to support us. <a href="http://www.matv.org/">Malden Access Television</a> and <a href="http://www.bostonsynergy.com/asianspectrum/as.php">Asian Spectrum</a> also came out to record our event and interview people.
