Malden River Design Forum

The first public Malden River Design Forum will take place on Wednesday, December 14 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The forum will feature a gallery of redesign projects by Boston Architectural College students for improving the Malden River corridor. Summer youth employees who worked at Tri-CAP will also present their work on the Malden River. In addition, Mystic River Watershed Association representatives will be present to showcase how these designs fit into the overall Mystic River Watershed.

The event will meet at the Malden Public Library on 36 Salem Street across from Malden High School. Light refreshments will be served courtesy of the Malden Redevelopment Authority. The event is hosted by Tri-CAP, Boston Architectural College, Mystic River Watershed Assocation, and the City of Malden.

Second Annual Malden River Festival

Preotle, Lane & Associates, Tufts University, and Tri-CAP will be hosting the Second Annual Malden River Festival this year at the Park at River’s Edge. The event will feature live entertainment, family activities, food vendors, giveaways, demonstrations, and performances through out the day. Artist exhibits will also grace the festival showcasing works by artists from the surrounding communities including Malden, Medford, and Everett.

The festival will take place on Saturday, September 17 with a rain date of Sunday, September 18. Artists works will be shown from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and all other activies will take place from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. Admission is free, and free parking will be available at the site location.

3rd Annual Urban Art Competition

Youth ACT will hosting its 3rd annual Urban Art Competition this Saturday on June 19, 2010. The competition will run from 12-3 pm in conjunction with the Malden River Festival that is taking place at the same time and location. The location of the festival is at River’s Edge Park located on River’s Edge Drive/Commercial Street in Medford. It is close to the Wellington T station and before Medford Street in Malden.

This year competitors will be using 2′x4′ boards and must bring their own paints or whatever materials they need. Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places.

Book-Making Workshop

Youth A.C.T. will be hosting a workshop on Saturday April 3rd from 1 PM to 2:30 pm at Wah Lum Kung Fu & Tai Chi Academy on 124 Ferry St in Malden for an envrionmentally friendly booking making activity. The workshop will be run by members of the Creative Arts in Learning Division at Lesley University Graduate School of Education. Please spread the word to your friends! Refreshments will be provided. If you can, please bring your own scissors and some old magazines. We hope to see you all there.

About the Workshop:
This workshop will teach participants a new technique that incorporates a wide variety of materials, including but not limited to recycled paper, ribbon, candy wrapper foil, coins, strips of tree bark, seashells, etc. For this hands-on, eco-friendly project, participants are encouraged to experiment and use their own styles. The goal of the workshop is to allow the participants to think about the environment through creating their own book. Participants will be introduced to a new and enjoyable art-making activity, which may be shared with their families and friends.

Watershed Activity

Youth A.C.T. will be hosting a workshop with Tri-CAP (Tri-City Community Action Program) this Saturday, March 20 @ 2pm at 124 Ferry Street in Malden. The workshop we are planning will be a watershed-building activity lead by Nick Cohen of Tri-CAP. The event will  also be the kick-off for a mural project at the Cyber Cafe in Malden regarding the river, the community, and the environment.

Gallery at Elm Street presents works
from the Urban Art Competition;
reception for the artists on Oct. 11

The Gallery at Elm Street, located at the First Parish in Malden and Saugus, presents works by 28 youth from last summer’s Urban Art Competition, sponsored by Youth A.C.T. The exhibition is on view on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.; Sundays from noon – 2 p.m.; and by appointment through November. A reception for the young artists is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 11, from 2 – 5 p.m.

Participating youth from Malden are Cristain Martinez, Jacqueline Bouley, Nicolette Timmins, Nathaniel Coulange, Thi Nguyen, Kathleen Knox, Harris Zhao, Jesse Bouley, Grace Cappuccio, Jessica Ma, Anthony Knox, and Jonathan Silva.

Everett youth are Mai Ly Nugyen, Brandon Phan, David Nguyen, Alex Gabrielli, Nguyen Le, Jenny Thang, Betty Ho, Mary Tran, Anna Nguyen, David Zorrilla, and Ghali Armira.
Other participants are Sandy Chan, Boston; Mahima Karki, Arogya Khadka, and David Huang, Somerville; and Stephenson Kim, Medford.

The Urban Art Competition enables local youth artists to come out and express their skills in public. The competition provides the opportunity for artists to showcase their work and to be recognized. The event took place at Lincoln Commons in Malden last July.

Sponsors are Asian Spectrum, Inc.; First Parish in Malden and Saugus; Friends of Oak Grove; Cambridge Health Alliance; Healthy Malden; YWCA, Malden; Kevin Duffy, Malden School Committee; Malden Cable Access Television (MATV); Chinese Culture Connection; American Red Cross of Mass. Bay; and Youth A.C.T.

Youth A.C.T. (action, coalition, trust) is a Malden-based, youth-led organization that addresses public issues through innovative and collaborative approaches. The group celebrates diversity and youth leadership, uniting to promote peace, justice, health, and green space.

The First Parish is a Unitarian Universalist congregation serving Malden, Everett, Saugus and neighboring communities. The church and gallery are located at Elm and Pleasant Streets (Route 60), three blocks west of the Malden Center T station. Convenient, free parking is available between the church and the Beebe Elementary School.

Urban Art Competition 2009

Title: Urban Art Competition

Description: Think you got the artistic skills in you? Come and enter the competition! Artists will be able to work on 4′ x 4′ boards and are welcome to bring your own paint and supplies. Judging criteria will be based on line, color, tone, space, and form. Prizes will be given to the winners.

Harvest Moon Festival

Youth A.C.T. will be in Malden, MA for the Harvest Moon Festival where we will have a table with information and activities focusing on healthy eating. We will also have a “Youth A.C.T.” banner made out of recyclable materials plus a timeline of our youth farm and the results of it.
